(Blessing after eating)

While most of the food blessings were instituted by the Sages, one food-related blessing is a Torah-level obligation: Grace After Meals (Birkat Hamazon). The obligation is based on Deut. 8:10: "You shall eat, and be satisfied, and bless."

Borei Nefashot

(Blessing on other foods)

We make the after-blessing "Borei Nefashot" on all food not made from grain or the 7 fruits with which Israel was blessed. This includes anything upon which we make the fore-blessings "Ha-adamah" or "Shehakol" (fish, meat, eggs, drinks-except wine, candy) plus all fruits not included in the special fruits of the Land of Israel. When finished your repast over the above foods, recite the blessing:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְ‑יָ אֱ‑לֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם בּוֹרֵא נְפָשׁוֹת רַבּוֹת וְחֶסְרוֹנָן עַל כָּל מַה שֶׁבָּרָאתָּ לְהַחֲיוֹת בָּהֶם נֶפֶשׁ כָּל חָי בָּרוּךְ חֵי הָעוֹלָמִים

Transliteration:

Baruch atah ado-nai elo-hai-nu melech haolam borei nefashot rabot v’chesronan al kol ma she’barata l’hachayot bahem nefesh kol chai baruch chei ha’olamim.

Translation:

Blessed are You, L-rd our G‑d, King of the universe, Creator of numerous living beings and their needs, for all the things You have created with which to sustain the soul of every living being. Blessed is He who is the Life of the worlds.

 

Bracha Me'ein Shalosh

(Three Faceted Blessing)

If the meal did not include bread: The "Three-Faceted Blessing" (Bracha Me'ein Shalosh) is said if you ate a minimum quantity of either: One of the five grains (wheat, barley, spelt, oats, rye); One of the fruits of Israel (grapes, olives, dates, figs, pomegranates); Wine or grape juice.

Al Ha'michya

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, for the nourishment and sustenance and for the produce of the field; for the desirable, good and spacious land that You were pleased to give our forefathers as a heritage, to eat of its fruits and to be satisfied with its goodness.

Have mercy, Lord our God, on Israel, Your people; on Jerusalem, Your city, and on Zion, the resting place of Your glory; upon Your alter, and upon Your Temple. Rebuild Jerusalem, the city of holiness, speedily in our days. Bring us up into it and gladden us in its rebuilding, and let us eat from its fruit, and be satisfied with its goodness, and bless You upon it in holiness and purity.

For You, Lord, are good and do good for all, and we thank You for the land and for the nourishment. Blessed are You, Lord, for the land and for the nourishment.

 

Al Ha'gefen

Birkat HaMazon

(Grace the meal)

The combined blessing of Birkat Hamazon is made only after eating a meal containing bread (including matza) made from one or all of wheat, barley, rye, oats, spelt.

Introduction

שִׁיר הַמַּעֲלוֹת, בְּשׁוּב יְיָ אֶת שִׁיבַת צִיּוֹן, הָיִינוּ כְּחֹלְמִים. אָז יִמָּלֵא שְׂחוֹק פִּינוּ וּלְשׁוֹנֵנוּ רִנָּה, אָז יֹאמְרוּ בַגּוֹיִם, הִגְדִּיל יְיָ לַעֲשׂוֹת עִם אֵלֶּה. הִגְדִּיל יְיָ לַעֲשׂוֹת עִמָּנוּ, הָיִינוּ שְׂמֵחִים. שׁוּבָה יְיָ אֶת שְׁבִיתֵנוּ, כַּאֲפִיקִים בַּנֶּגֶב. הַזֹּרְעִים בְּדִמְעָה, בְּרִנָּה יִקְצֽרוּ. הָלוֹךְ יֵלֵךְ וּבָכֹה נֹשֵׂא מֶשֶׁךְ הַזָּרַע, בֹּא יָבֹא בְרִנָּה נֹשֵׂא אֲלֻמֹּתָיו.

Ba-avur sh’mo hagadol, ki hu Eil zan um-farneis lakol, u-meitiv lakol u-meichin mazon l’chol-b’riyotav asher bara. Baruch atah Adonai, hazan et hakol.

Translation:

Blessed is Adonai our God, Sovereign of the universe, who sustains the entire world with goodness, kindness and mercy. God gives food to all creatures, for God’s mercy is everlasting. With abundant goodness we have never lacked, and may we never lack sustenance forever in God’s great name. God sustains all, does good to all, and provides food for all the creatures created. Blessed is Adonai, who provides food for all.

Part 2 - Blessing on the Land

Transliteration: 

Nodeh l’cha Adonai Eloheinu al she-hinchalta la-avoteinu eretz chemda tovah urchava,, v’al she-hotzeitanu Adonai Eloheinu mei-eretz mitzrayim uf-ditanu mibeit avadim, v’al brit’cha she-chatamta biv-sareinu, v’al torat-cha she-limad-tanu, v’al chukecha she-hodatanu, v’al chayim, chein va-chesed she-chonantanu, v’al achilat mazon she-ata zan um-farneis otanu tamid, b’chol-yom uv’chol-eit uv’chol-sha’ah.

V’al hakol Adonai Eloheinu anachnu modim lach um-varchim otach yitbarach shimcha b’fi chol chai tamid l’olam va-ed, kakatuv: “V’achalta v’savata uveirachta et-Adonai Elohecha al ha-aretz hatova asher natan lach.” Baruch Atah Adonai, al ha-aretz v’al hamazon.

Translation: 

We thank The Lord our God for having given a lovely and spacious land to our ancestors; for having liberated us from the land of Egypt and freed us from the house of bondage; for the covenant which God has sealed in our flesh, for the Torah which God has taught us; for the laws which God has made known to us; for the life, grace and loving kindness which God has bestowed upon us, and for the sustenance with which God nourishes and maintains us continually, in every season, every day, even every hour.

For all these blessings we thank The Lord our God with praise. May God’s name be praised by every living being forever, as it is written: “When you have eaten your fill, give thanks to The Lord your God for the good land which God has given you.” Blessed is God for the land and its produce.

Part 3 - Blessing on Jerusalem

רַחֵם נא, יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ, עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל עַמֶּךָ, וְעַל יְרוּשָׁלַיִם עִירֶךָ, וְעַל צִיּוֹן מִשְׁכַּן כְּבוֹדֶךָ, וְעַל מַלְכוּת בֵּית דָּוִד מְשִׁיחֶךָ, וְעַל הַבַּיִת הַגָּדוֹל וְהַקָּדוֹשׁ שֶׁנִּקְרָא שִׁמְךָ עָלָיו. אֱלֹהֵינוּ, אָבִינוּ, רְעֵנוּ, זוּנֵנוּ, פַּרְנְסֵנוּ, וְכַלְכְּלֵנוּ, וְהַרְוִיחֵנוּ, וְהַרְוַח לָנוּ יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מְהֵרָה מִכָּל צָרוֹתֵינוּ, וְנָא אַל תַּצְרִיכֵנוּ, יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ, לֹא לִידֵי מַתְּנַת בָּשָׂר וָדָם, וְלֹא לִידֵי הַלְוָאָתָם, כִּי אִם לְיָדְךָ הַמְּלֵאָה, הַפְּתוּחָה, הַקְּדוֹשָׁה וְהָרְחָבָה, שֶׁלֹּא נֵבוֹשׁ וְלֹא נִכָּלֵם לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד.

 וּבְנֵה יְרוּשָׁלַיִם עִיר הַקּֽדֶשׁ בִּמְהֵרָה בְיָמֵינוּ. בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, בּוֹנֵה בְרַחֲמָיו יְרוּשָׁלָיִם. אָמֵן

Transliteration: 

Racheim Adonai Eloheinu al Yisrael amecha, v’al Y’rushalayim irecha, v’al Tzion mishkan k’vodecha, v’al malchut beit David m’shichecha, v’al habayit hagadol v’hakadosh shenikra shimcha alav. Eloheinu avinu, r’einu zuneinu, parn’seinu v’chalk’lenu v’harvicheinu, v’harvach-lanu, Adonai Eloheinu, m’heira mikol-tzaroteinu. V’na al tatz-richeinu, Adonai Eloheinu, lo lidei matnat basar vadam v’lo lidei hal-va-atam, ki im l’yad’cha ham’lei-a hap’tucha hak-dosha v’har’chava, shelo neivosh v’lo nikaleim l’olam va-ed.

Uv-nei Y’rushalayim ir hakodesh bimheira v’yameinu. Baruch atah Adonai, boneh v’rachamav Y’rushalayim. Amein.

Translation:

Have mercy, O Lord our God, upon Israel thy people, upon Jerusalem thy city, upon Zion the abiding place of thy glory, upon the kingdom of the house of David thine anointed, and upon the great and holy house that was called by thy name. O our God, our Father, feed us, nourish us, sustain, support and relieve us, and speedily O Lord our God, grant us relief from all our troubles. We beseech thee, O Lord our God, let us not be in need either of the gifts of flesh and blood or of their loans, but only of thy helping hand, which is full, open, holy and ample, so that we may not be ashamed nor confounded for ever and ever.

May God rebuild Jerusalem, the holy city, speedily in our lifetime. Blessed is God, who restores Jerusalem with mercy. Amen.

Part 4 -  Hatov Vehametiv (Blessing over joy)

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu melech ha-olam, ha-Eil avinu Malkeinu adireinu bor’einu go-aleinu yotz’reinu k’dosheinu k’dosh Ya’akov, ro-einu ro-ei Yisrael, hamelech hatov v’hameitiv lakol, sheb’chol-yom vayom hu heitiv, hu meitiv, hu yeitiv lanu. Hu g’malanu hu gomleinu hu yig-m’leinu la-ad l’chein ul-chesed ul-rachamim ul-revach, hatzala v’hatzlacha b’racha vi-shua nechama, parnasa v’chalkala v’rachamim v’chayim v’shalom v’chol-tov, u-mikol tuv l’olam al y’chasreinu.

Translation:

Blessed art thou, O Lord our God, King of the universe, O God, our Father, our King, our Mighty One, our Creator, our Redeemer, our Maker, our Holy One, the Holy One of Jacob, our Shepherd, the Shepherd of Israel, O King, who art kind and dealest kindly with all, day by day thou hast dealt kindly, dost deal kindly, and wilt deal kindly with us: thou hast bestowed, thou dost bestow, thou wilt ever bestow benefits upon us, yielding us grace, lovingkindness, mercy and relief, deliverance and prosperity, blessing and salvation, consolation, sustenance and supports mercy, life, peace and all good: of no manner of good let us be in want.

Part 5 - HaRachaman

הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יִמְלוֹךְ עָלֵינוּ לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד. הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יִתְבָּרַךְ בַּשָׁמַיִם וּבָאָֽרֶץ. הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יִשְׁתַּבַּח לְדוֹר דּוֹרִים, וְיִתְפָּאַר בָּנוּ לָעַד וּלְנֵצַח נְצָחִים, וְיִתְהַדַּר בָּנוּ לָעַד וּלְעוֹלְמֵי עוֹלָמִים. הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יְפַרְנְסֵנוּ בְּכָבוֹד.  הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יִשְׁבּוֹר עֻלֵּנוּ מֵעַל צַוָּארֵנוּ וְהוּא יוֹלִיכֵנוּ קוֹמְמִיּוּת לְאַרְצֵנוּ.  הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יִשְׁלַח לָֽנוּ בְּרָכָה מְרֻבָּה בַּבַּיִת הַזֶּה, וְעַל שֻׁלְחָן זֶה שֶׁאָכַלְנוּ עָלָיו.  הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יִשְׁלַח לָנוּ אֶת אֵלִיָּהוּ הַנָּבִיא זָכוּר לַטּוֹב, וִיבַשֶּׂר לָנוּ בְּשׂוֹרוֹת טוֹבוֹת יְשׁוּעוֹת וְנֶחָמוֹת.

  הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יְבָרֵךְ אֶת כל המסובים כאן, אוֹתָנוּ וְאֶת כָּל אֲשֶׁר לָנוּ, כְּמוֹ שֶׁנִתְבָּרְכוּ אֲבוֹתֵינוּ, אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק וְיַעֲקֹבַּכֹּל, מִכֹּל, כֹּל, כֵּן יְבָרֵךְ אוֹתָנוּ כֻּלָּנוּ יַחַד בִּבְרָכָה שְׁלֵמָה, וְנֹאמַר אָמֵן 

Transliteration: 

HaRachaman, hu yimloch aleinu l 'olam va-ed.
HaRachaman, hu yitbarach bashamayim uvaaretz.
HaRachaman, hu yishtabach l'dor dorim,
v'yitpaar banu laad ul'neitzach n'tzachim,
v'yit-hadar banu laad ul'ol'mei olamim.
HaRachaman, hu y'vareich et m'dinat Yisrael v'et acheinu v'achayoteinu b'rochvei haolam.
HaRachaman, hu y'farn'seinu b'chavod.
HaRachaman, hu yishbor uleinu mei-al tzavareinu,
v'hu yolicheinu kom'miyut l'artzeinu.
HaRachaman, hu yishlach b'rachah m'rubah babayit hazeh,
v'al shulchan zeh she-achalnu alav.
HaRachaman, hu yishlach lanu et Eliyahu HaNavi,
zachur latov, vivaser lanu b'sorot tovot, y'shuot v'nechamot. 

Harachaman hu y.vareich et-kol-ham.subim kan, otanu-v.et-kol asher lanu. K.mo she-nitbarchu avoteinu: Avraham, Yitzchak, v.Ya-akov, {v.imoteinu: Sarah, Rivkah, Leah, v.Rachel,} bakol mikol kol, kein y.vareich otanu kulanu yachad bivracha sh.leima, v.nomar: Amein.

Translation:

 May the Merciful One be blessed in heaven and on earth. May the Merciful One be praised in all generations, be glorified through us to all eternity, and be honored among us forever. May the Merciful One grant us an honorable livelihood. May the Merciful One break the yoke of our oppression and lead us in dignity to our ancient homeland. May the Merciful One send abundant blessing upon this dwelling and the table at which we have eaten.  May the Merciful One send Elijah the Prophet to us, and may he bear good tidings of salvation and comfort. 

May the Merciful One bless all who are gathered here and all their families, as well as all dear to us. Even as our forefathers: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, were blessed in every way; so may God bless all of us together with a perfect blessing, and let us say: Amen.  

Part 6 - Bamarom Yelamdu

בַּמָּרוֹם יְלַמְּדוּ עֲלֵיהֶם וְעָלֵינוּ זְכוּת, שֶׁתְּהֵא לְמִשְׁמֶרֶת שָׁלוֹם, וְנִשָּׂא בְרָכָה מֵאֵת יְיָ, וּצְדָקָה מֵאֱלֹהֵי יִשְׁעֵנוּ, וְנִמְצָא חֵן וְשֵׂכֶל טוֹב בְּעֵינֵי אֱלֹהִים וְאָדָם  

 הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יַנְחִילֵנוּ יוֹם שֶׁכֻּלּוֹ שַׁבָּת וּמְנוּחָה לְחַיֵּי הָעוֹלָמִים. הָרַחֲמָן, הוּא יְזַכֵּנוּ לִימוֹת הַמָּשִׁיחַ וּלְחַיֵּי הָעוֹלָם הַבָּא, מַגְדִּיל  יְשׁוּעוֹת מַלְכּוֹ וְעֹֽשֶׂה חֶסֶד לִמְשִׁיחוֹ לְדָוִד וּלְזַרְעוֹ עַד עוֹלָם. עֹשֶׂה שָׁלוֹם בִּמְרוֹמָיו, הוּא יַעֲשֶׂה שָׁלוֹם עָלֵינוּ וְעַל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן.

  יְראוּ אֶת יְיָ קְדֹשָׁיו, כִּי אֵין מַחְסוֹר לִירֵאָיו. כְּפִירִים רָשׁוּ וְרָעֵבוּ, וְדֹרְשֵׁי יְיָ לֹא יַחְסְרוּ כָל טוֹב. הוֹדוּ לַיְיָ כִּי טוֹב, כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ. פּוֹתֵחַ אֶת יָדֶךָ, וּמַשְׂבִּיעַ לְכָל חַי רָצוֹן. בָּרוּךְ הַגֶּבֶר אֲשֶׁר יִבְטַח בַּיְיָ, וְהָיָה יְיָ מִבְטַחוֹ. נַעַר הָיִיתִי גַּם זָקַנְתִּי, וְלֹא רָאִיתִי צַדִּיק נֶעֱזָב, וְזַרְעוֹ מְבַקֶּשׁ לָחֶם. יְיָ עֹז לְעַמּוֹ יִתֵּן, יְיָ יְבָרֵךְ אֶת עַמּוֹ בַשָּׁלוֹם.

Transliteration:

Bamarom y’lamdu, aleyhem v’aleynu z’choot sh’tehay l’mishmeret shalom. V’nisah bracha m’et adonai, u’tzdakah m’elohey yish’ey’nu. V’nimtzah chen v’sechel tov b’eyney elohim v’adam.

Harachaman, hu yan-chileinu yom shekulo Shabbat umnucha l.chayei haolamim. HaRachaman, hu y'zakeinu limot hag'ulah
ul'chayei haolam haba. Magdil y.shu-ot malko v.oseh chesed limshicho, l’David ul.zar-o ad olam. Oseh shalom bimromav hu ya-aseh shalom aleinu v.al kol-Yisrael, v.imru: Amein.

Y’ru et-Adonai k’doshav ki ein machsor lirei-av. K’firim rashu v’ra-eivu v’dorshei Adonai lo yach-s’ru chol-tov. Hodu Ladonai ki tov, ki l’olam chasdo. Potei-ach et-yadecha u-masbia l’chol-chai ratzon. Baruch hagever asher yivtach b’Adonai, v’haya Adonai mivtacho. Na-ar hayiti gam zakanti, v’lo ra’iti tzadik ne-ezav v’zar-o m’vakesh-lachem.

Translation:

Both on their and our own behalf may there be such advocacy on high as shall lead to enduring peace; and may we receive a blessing from God, and righteousness from the God of our salvation; and may we find grace and good understanding in the sight of God and all humanity.

May the All-merciful make us worthy of the days of the Messiah, and of the life of the world to come. On Sabbaths, Festivals, and New Moons—He is a tower of salvation to his king; On Week-days—Great salvation giveth he to his king. And showeth lovingkindness to his anointed, to David and to his seed, for evermore. He who maketh peace in his high places, may he make peace for us and for all Israel, and say ye, Amen.

O fear the Lord, ye his holy ones; for there is no want to them that fear him. Young lions do lack and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good. O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his lovingkindness endureth for ever. Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest every living thing with favor. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose trust the Lord is. I have been young and now I am old; yet have I not seen. the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging for bread. The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace.
